Some knowledge about cooling fan bearings

We all know that fans make noise when they rotate. However, it is not easy to identify the exact cause because many factors affect the noise level, including fan speed, fan size, dynamic balance of the fan, usage environment, and so on.

We all know that fans make noise when they rotate. However, it is not easy to pinpoint the exact cause because many factors affect the noise level, including fan speed, fan size, fan dynamic balance, usage environment, and so on. One of the most important factors is Fan bearing types. So how should we choose bearings for cooling fans? Let's learn about the types of bearings.

1. Oil-impregnated bearing
Introduction: Oil-impregnated bearings are currently the most commonly used type of cooling fan bearing. They use lubricating oil as a lubricant and friction reducer, suitable for low-speed and small-sized fans. Typically, the lifespan of fans with oil-impregnated bearings is 5,000 to 8,000 hours.

2. Hydraulic bearing
Introduction: Hydraulic bearings are an improvement based on oil-impregnated bearings. They use a unique ring-shaped oil supply circuit, which greatly reduces oil leakage issues. Their lifespan is significantly extended compared to ordinary oil-impregnated bearings, reaching 40,000 hours while retaining the advantages of oil-impregnated bearings. This is currently the mainstream bearing technology, and fans with this bearing type hold a significant share in the current cooling fan market.

3. Dual ball bearing
Introduction: Dual ball bearings use two ball bearings. Inside the bearing, several tiny steel balls revolve around the axis. When the fan blades or shaft rotate, the steel balls rotate as well. Because they are spherical, friction is low and there is no oil leakage problem. The lifespan ranges from 50,000 to 100,000 hours.

4. Single ball bearing
Introduction: Single ball bearings are an improvement on traditional oil-impregnated bearings, combining sliding friction and rolling friction. They use one ball bearing plus one oil-impregnated bearing to reduce the cost compared to dual ball bearings. The rotor and stator are lubricated by the ball bearing and lubricating oil, with a lifespan of up to 40,000 hours.
